Agenda
How can medical students develop a positive mindset and maintain their resilience in the face of stress and challenges?
How can we develop new approaches to improve medical education and outcomes?
I am Dr. Amruti Borad and I am a Family Medicine Physician.
I interviewed for medical school when I was 17 years old and with an early career start, I had to overcome multiple, mostly mindset barriers, throughout my medical education. Being a medical student is an adventure. The anticipation of the first day of orientation; the white coat ceremony; meeting new people; endless hours of lectures, followed by late nights of studying at home; dissecting for the first time; study groups; problem-based learning; the knot in your stomach before your very first exam; volunteering/shadowing/rotations during which you experience the joy and devastation that can be patient care; an incessant feeling of less than; waiting on your…
I know that if I had even more guidance through collaboration with my peers and those who were already on the other side (Attending), I would have asked more questions, engaged more with my peers, had a better relationship with challenges, wouldn’t have second guessed my decision to go into medicine, possibly made larger impacts, and I would have had more fun on the journey, rather than always thinking of the next destination.
Medical Journey: Step 1, Peer Challenges, Life's Complexities
…Step 1 exam results, that essentially determines your fate; witnessing your peers simultaneously going through different challenging stages of life (marriage, divorce, having children, miscarriages, deaths in the family, new serious medical conditions, mental health disorders, substance abuse); comparing your successes and failures to that of others…
Med School: Choices, Match Day, Mentorship
…wondering if you made the right career choice whether that be medicine or the specialty you chose; anticipating match day; graduation day, and then the “real world.” In my opinion, being a medical student is the true definition of the human experience. During my transitions, mentorship was key to keeping me on the path that was right for me.

As an Attending, I had the invaluable opportunity of working in Academic medicine, during which time my greatest passion was teaching medical students how to cultivate their clinical skills and build self-confidence. Shortly thereafter, I was Physician Leader and unfortunately succumbed to burnout twice.
It was then that I chose to invest in myself by engaging with a Physician Coach, an experience that changed my life. I developed the courage to openly discuss my struggles with my supervisors, requested part-time hours, and ultimately did what was best for me. As a result, I have since been able to practice medicine on a much more sustainable basis – one more in line with my values.
Now, I use my knowledge and experiences to collaborate with medical students and help them find clarity in moments of transition with 1:1 coaching – whether it be managing emotions around change, preventing or treating burnout, navigating the different stages of medical school, choosing a specialty, or making life-altering decisions. At the core, I strive to empower each medical student to trust themselves and discover the solutions within themselves.
